How Long Does a Wall Bed Last? What Wears, What Lasts and Why
By DWALS Team · Last updated October 2026
How long does a wall bed last? It depends on the parts, how often you open and close it, and how you look after it. There isn’t one honest number of years that fits every bed. The lifting mechanism does the most work, so it’s usually the first part to need attention, while the cabinet and frame move far less. The mattress is separate and wears like any other mattress. What you can ask for, from any maker, is a tested cycle rating: how many open-and-close cycles the mechanism has been tested to.
This guide explains wear part by part, what DWALS’s published rating of 300 kg and 40,000 cycles means, and how to keep a wall bed working well in a Mumbai flat.
What wears first, and what lasts
The lifting mechanism
The gas struts (also called pistons) do the lifting. They carry the weight of the frame and the mattress every time the bed opens or closes. Because they do the most work, they’re the part most likely to need attention first. That’s why a tested cycle rating matters more than a guess in years.
DWALS uses gas spring struts rated to 300 kg and cycle-tested to 40,000 open-and-close cycles. Every mechanism is cycle-tested before it leaves DWALS’s Pune factory. The struts are sealed, self-damping units of the kind used in car tailgates. They don’t rely on springs that stretch or cables that fray.
A cycle rating is a test result. It is not a promise of a certain number of years. How long a strut lasts in your home depends on how often you use the bed, the mattress weight, and conditions in the room.
Hinges, hardware and wall fixings
Hinges and lifting hardware move with every open and close. Wall anchors hold the cabinet. DWALS fixes cabinets with anchors sized for brick, RCC or block walls, through a few points along the back, with no civil work. If a bed ever feels loose at the wall, or the motion feels uneven, call the maker’s service team rather than tightening things yourself.
The cabinet and frame
The cabinet and welded frame take less daily movement than the struts. Wear here is often cosmetic, such as marks on the laminate or edge-banding. DWALS’s warranty covers the carcass and welded frame against failure in normal domestic use, but not cosmetic wear on laminate and edge-banding. Ask any maker what the cabinet is made of, and what the warranty covers, before you order. DWALS doesn’t publish its cabinet material on the website, so ask.
The mattress
The mattress wears separately. A wall bed takes a standard mattress, and the mattress has its own manufacturer’s terms. DWALS builds around single 3×6, double 4×6, queen 5×6 and king 6×6 ft mattresses in spring, foam or coir, and sets the strut force to the mattress’s thickness and weight at the measurement. If you change the mattress later, have the struts re-tuned. DWALS says a re-tune after a mattress change is a common service visit.
What “tested to 40,000 cycles” means
One open and one close is one cycle. A rating of 40,000 cycles means the mechanism was tested through that many open-and-close cycles under the published load. DWALS states that every mechanism is cycle-tested on its floor before it leaves the Pune factory.
What it does not mean is a fixed lifespan in years. Dividing a cycle rating by the days in a year makes tidy maths, but real homes are messier: humidity, mattress weight, how the bed is used and how it’s looked after all play a part. So treat 40,000 cycles as a published test result you can compare between makers, not as a calendar expiry date.
If a maker can’t give you a cycle rating in writing, ask why. Our wall bed buying guide covers this among the questions to ask before you order. Fit also matters for wear: see how much space a wall bed needs.
Daily use vs guest use
More open-and-close cycles mean more wear on the mechanism. A bed opened every night will accumulate cycles faster than one used only when guests stay. That doesn’t mean daily use is wrong. It means you should choose a mechanism rated for the way you’ll actually use it, and follow the maker’s care advice.

Mumbai humidity and your wall bed
Mumbai’s monsoon brings humidity, and flats near the sea or with damp walls need a bit more care.
At the site measurement, mention any damp wall, seepage or AC drip near the wall you want to use. After that, day to day:
- Wipe spills on the cabinet promptly.
- Keep the area in front of the bed clear, so the bed isn’t forced against wet floors or soaked rugs when it opens.
Don’t expect waterproof or termite-proof claims unless the maker states them in writing for the materials used. Ask what the cabinet is made of and how the edges are finished. DWALS doesn’t publish its cabinet material, so ask at the measurement.
Simple habits that help it last
These habits cost nothing and reduce avoidable wear:
- Tuck the bedding in before you close the bed. On a DWALS bed, the mattress stays strapped to the frame with the bedding on it, so you close it made and open it made. Loose pillows or thick quilts hanging over the sides can snag.
- Stay within the mattress the bed was set up for. If you change thickness or weight, ask for a re-tune.
- Don’t hang weight on the open bed or use it as a step.
- Open and close it the way the team showed you at handover: pull the handle and guide it down.
- Leave the struts sealed. DWALS’s struts are sealed units, so don’t oil or grease them; call service if the bed feels heavier, noisier or less even than at handover.
Service, warranty and moving house
Who services it?
Ask who comes if something needs attention. DWALS says you call them, and their own technician comes, not a vendor or a franchisee. Parts are kept in DWALS’s own stores, and a gas strut is a bolt-on part that swaps in minutes. If a failure is covered by the warranty, the part and the visit are free. Outside warranty, DWALS quotes the part before coming.
What does the warranty cover?
DWALS gives a 5-year warranty on the structure and lifting mechanism. It covers the carcass and welded frame against failure in normal domestic use, and the gas-spring pistons and lifting hardware. It does not cover cosmetic wear on laminate and edge-banding, or the mattress, which has its own manufacturer’s terms. Ask any maker for the term and the exclusions in writing before you pay.
What if you move?
A wall bed can move with you if the maker offers it. DWALS’s own team dismantles the bed, transports it and re-installs it in the new home, re-tuning the mechanism for the new wall. That matters if you rent and may change flats.
Questions to ask any maker about durability
Before you confirm an order, ask:
- What is the mechanism’s tested cycle rating, and is it in writing?
- What load is it rated to, and how is it set for my mattress?
- What does the warranty cover, for how long, and what does it exclude?
- What is the cabinet made of, and how are the edges finished?
- Who services it later, and are parts kept in stock?
- Will you re-tune or move the bed if I change the mattress or move house?

FAQ
How long does a wall bed last?
It depends on the parts, how often you use it and how you look after it. The lifting mechanism does the most work, so it usually needs attention first; the cabinet moves far less. Ask any maker for its tested cycle rating rather than a single number of years.
What wears out first on a wall bed?
The gas struts or lifting mechanism are usually the first to need attention, because they work on every open and close. The cabinet and frame last longer. The mattress wears separately, under its own manufacturer’s terms.
What does “tested to 40,000 cycles” mean?
It means the mechanism was tested through 40,000 open-and-close cycles under the published load. It is a test result, not a fixed lifespan in years. DWALS rates its struts to 300 kg and cycle-tests every mechanism before it leaves Pune.
Can you use a wall bed every day?
That depends on the mechanism and how it’s looked after. More daily cycles mean more wear, so compare tested cycle ratings and follow the maker’s care advice.
Does Mumbai humidity affect a wall bed?
Humidity can matter for any furniture. Mention damp walls or seepage at the measurement, wipe spills promptly, and ask what the cabinet is made of. Don’t rely on waterproof claims unless the maker puts them in writing.
Should I oil the gas struts?
No. DWALS’s struts are sealed units, so don’t oil or grease them yourself; call service. Do the same if the bed feels heavier, noisier or uneven.
What does the DWALS warranty cover?
DWALS gives a 5-year warranty on the structure and lifting mechanism. It covers the carcass, welded frame, gas-spring pistons and lifting hardware. It excludes cosmetic wear on laminate and edge-banding, and the mattress.
Who replaces a strut, and what if I move house?
DWALS’s own technicians handle service across Mumbai and the MMR, with parts in its own stores. If you move, DWALS’s team dismantles, transports and re-installs the bed, and re-tunes the mechanism for the new wall.
