Wall Bed Buying Guide for Mumbai: Questions to Ask Before You Order
By DWALS Team · Last updated October 2026
This wall bed buying guide covers everything to confirm before you pay a deposit. Check that your room has the height, width and depth. Find out what your wall is made of, whether you need society or landlord permission, and how the bed will get into your flat. Ask about the mechanism’s rating, your mattress, the price and what it includes, how payments are split, who installs it, the warranty, and who services it later.
A wall bed is fixed to your wall and you use it every day, so these questions matter more than they would for a sofa or a table. Below, each one comes with why it matters and what a good answer looks like. The checklist at the end works with any maker.
How we wrote this: we make wall beds, so we’ve kept this guide neutral. Where we give DWALS’s own answer, it’s as published on dwals.in on 4 October 2026, and linked. Where DWALS doesn’t publish an answer, we tell you to ask the maker rather than guess.
Start with your room
Before you call anyone, measure three things: the clear wall width, the ceiling height at that wall, and the room depth from that wall to the nearest fixed obstacle. Our guide to how much space a wall bed needs walks you through each one.
Then note the things a tape measure along a bare wall won’t show:
- A loft or beam above the wall, which lowers the usable height
- A window on the wall you want to use
- A split AC, fan or hanging light near the wall
- Switchboards and sockets that the cabinet would cover
- Skirting tiles along the bottom of the wall
- Doors that swing into the space where the open bed would be
Any of these can change the design. For example, DWALS builds the bed horizontal, folding sideways from a lower, wider cabinet, if the ceiling is under 7 ft 2 in or a window or beam is in the way (DWALS fit FAQ). A good maker will ask about all of them at the site measurement. If a maker quotes without visiting, ask how they’ll check.
Your wall and your building
What is your wall made of?
A wall bed is anchored to the wall, so the wall has to hold it. Ask the maker which wall types they fix to, how many fixing points they use, and whether any civil work is needed. DWALS’s answer: anchors sized for brick, RCC or block walls, through a few points along the back of the cabinet, with no civil work (DWALS wall-fixing FAQ). If you don’t know what your wall is made of, the site measurement is where it should be checked.
Rented flat or housing society?
Get your landlord’s agreement before anything is drilled, and check whether your society has rules about furniture work or permitted working hours. Ask the maker whether they can describe the fixing method in writing. DWALS says it can, if your landlord or society asks, and that when the bed is removed, the anchor holes are filled and painted over (DWALS rental FAQ).
Getting it into the flat
Many Mumbai buildings have small lifts, narrow stairs or tight corridors. Ask the maker how the bed is delivered: whole, or in parts that are assembled in your flat. Measure your lift, stairwell and doorways if you’re unsure, and mention them at the measurement. DWALS doesn’t publish how its beds are delivered, so ask.
The bed itself
The mechanism and its rating
The mechanism is what you’ll rely on every night. Ask for its rating in writing: how much weight it carries and how many open-and-close cycles it has been tested to. As an example of what to look for, DWALS publishes that its gas struts are rated to 300 kg and tested to 40,000 cycles, and that every mechanism is cycle-tested before it leaves its Pune factory (DWALS mechanism).
Also ask how heavy it feels to lift. DWALS’s beds open with one hand in about eight seconds (DWALS FAQ).
How does it stay closed?
Ask every maker how the bed stays shut when it’s folded away, and how it opens. DWALS’s answer is that the bed can’t fall open on its own: when it’s closed, the struts hold it against the cabinet, and it only comes down when you pull the handle and guide it (DWALS FAQ).
Your mattress: size and thickness
A wall bed is built around a mattress, so confirm yours will work before you order. Ask which sizes the bed takes, whether there’s a maximum mattress thickness, and how the mechanism is adjusted for your mattress’s weight. Get the thickness limit in writing.
DWALS builds around standard sizes: single 3×6, double 4×6, queen 5×6 and king 6×6 ft, in spring, foam or coir. At the measurement visit, it asks about your mattress’s thickness and weight, and sets the strut force to match (DWALS mattress FAQ). DWALS doesn’t publish a maximum thickness, so ask.
Cabinet material and finish
Ask what the cabinet is made of, what finish options there are, and how the edges are finished. Ask to see a sample, not just photos. DWALS offers more than 500 laminate finishes, including matte, high-gloss, woodgrain, acrylic and fabric-texture (DWALS finishes). It doesn’t publish its cabinet material on the website, so ask.
What decides the price of a wall bed
Whichever maker you choose, these are the things that move the price:
- Size: the mattress size, and so the cabinet size.
- Vertical or horizontal: the two are built differently, so they’re priced differently.
- What’s built around the bed: a sofa in front (wall bed with sofa), side cabinets, or a full wall unit with wardrobes, lofts and a desk.
- Finish: the laminate you choose.
- Your site: anything about the wall or room that changes the design.
When you compare quotes, check what each one includes: the mattress or not, delivery, installation, and the warranty. A quote that looks lower may leave something out.
As a reference point, DWALS’s starting prices are ₹70,000 for a vertical wall bed and ₹85,000 for a horizontal one, and the final price depends on size, finish and site conditions (DWALS prices). DWALS doesn’t quote before someone has measured your wall. The measurement is free, and the quotation is fixed for the configuration on it (DWALS pricing FAQ).
The order: design and payment
Will you see the design first?
Ask whether you’ll see a layout before you pay anything. DWALS’s process runs in eight steps: an enquiry call, a free site measurement, a 3D layout, then quotation and confirmation, production, quality and cycle testing, delivery and installation, and finally handover (DWALS process).
How are payments split?
Ask for the payment stages in writing before you confirm, and avoid open-ended “balance on demand” terms. DWALS publishes its own: 50% on confirmation of the quotation, 20% when your unit goes into production, and 30% on the day it’s installed (DWALS payment milestones).
How long will it take?
A made-to-measure bed has a production window. Ask for the delivery date at quotation. DWALS makes each bed to measure in its own Pune factory, gives the date at quotation and confirms it when the advance is received (DWALS FAQ).
Installation, handover and after-sales
Who installs it, and how long does it take?
Ask whether the maker’s own team installs the bed or a subcontractor does, and how long it takes. DWALS’s own team installs it, in one working day for a bed or a bed-and-sofa unit. A full wall unit takes longer, and you’re told how long at quotation (DWALS installation FAQ).
Will someone show you how to use it?
Ask for a proper demonstration at handover, for everyone who’ll use the bed. At DWALS, a professional shows every household how to use it, including children, elders and senior citizens, so the first time you open it is with the team in the room.
What does the warranty cover?
Ask for the warranty in writing, and check exactly which parts it covers, especially the mechanism. Also ask what it doesn’t cover. DWALS gives a written warranty on the structure and the lifting mechanism, with the exact term printed on your quotation. It covers the carcass and welded frame, and the gas-spring pistons and lifting hardware. It doesn’t cover cosmetic wear on the laminate and edge-banding, or the mattress, which has its own manufacturer’s terms (DWALS warranty FAQ).
Who services it later?
Ask who comes if something needs attention: the maker’s own technicians or a third party, and whether parts are kept in stock. DWALS says its own technicians handle service calls across Mumbai and the MMR, parts are kept in its own stores, and a gas strut is a bolt-on part that swaps in minutes (DWALS service FAQ).
What if you move house?
Ask whether the maker will move the bed for you. DWALS’s own team dismantles it, moves it and re-installs it in your new home, re-tuning the mechanism for the new wall (DWALS FAQ).

FAQ
What should I check before buying a wall bed?
Check your room’s height, width and depth, your wall type, permission from your landlord or society, and how the bed will get into your flat. Then ask the maker about the mechanism’s rating, your mattress, what the price includes, the payment stages, installation, the warranty and servicing.
What decides the price of a wall bed?
The size, whether it’s vertical or horizontal, what’s built around it (a sofa, side cabinets or a full wall unit), the finish, and anything about your site that changes the design. DWALS gives a fixed quotation only after a free measurement of your wall.
Will my wall take a wall bed?
It depends on the wall, so it should be checked at the site measurement. DWALS fixes its cabinets with anchors sized for brick, RCC or block walls, through a few points along the back, with no civil work.
Is there a mattress thickness limit for a wall bed?
Ask the maker for the limit in writing. DWALS builds around standard 3×6, 4×6, 5×6 and 6×6 ft mattresses, and sets the strut force to your mattress’s thickness and weight at the measurement visit.
What warranty should I look for on a wall bed?
Get it in writing, and check that it covers the mechanism as well as the cabinet. DWALS gives a written warranty on the structure and the lifting mechanism, with the exact term printed on your quotation.
How are payments for a wall bed usually split?
It varies by maker, so get the stages in writing before you confirm. DWALS asks for 50% on confirmation of the quotation, 20% when the unit goes into production, and 30% on the day it’s installed.
How does a wall bed stay closed?
Ask each maker. DWALS says its bed can’t fall open on its own: when it’s closed, the struts hold it against the cabinet, and it only comes down when you pull the handle and guide it.
What happens after a wall bed is installed?
At DWALS, a professional shows everyone in the household how to use the bed at handover. After that, DWALS’s own technicians handle service calls across Mumbai and the MMR, and its team will dismantle and re-install the bed if you move.
