Wall Bed vs Normal Bed: Which Is Right for Your Mumbai Home?
By DWALS Team · Last updated October 2026
Wall bed vs normal bed: which should you buy? A wall bed suits a room that has to do two jobs, like a bedroom that’s also a home office, a play area or a living room. A normal bed suits a room that’s only ever a bedroom. It never needs folding, and there’s nothing to fix to the wall. The rest of this guide is about which of those describes your home.
We make wall beds, so we’ve tried to be fair about this. Below you’ll find where a wall bed wins, where a normal bed wins, and a checklist to help you decide.
How we wrote this: every DWALS fact and price below is as published on dwals.in on 4 October 2026, and linked. We haven’t used any of the floor-space percentages or lifespan figures found on other sites, because they disagree with each other and none of them is sourced.

Where a wall bed wins
The room gets to do a second job
A normal bed takes up the middle of the room around the clock, even though you use it only at night. A wall bed folds away into a cabinet that projects 12 inches from the wall. In the daytime, the floor is free for a desk, a play area, a sofa or an exercise mat.
In a Mumbai 1BHK or 1RK, that can mean the difference between a bedroom and a room you use all day. If you need seating as well, DWALS’s wall bed with sofa (Murphy bed combo) puts a sofa in front of the folded bed, from ₹1,25,000.
It’s the same mattress, so it can be just as comfortable
A wall bed isn’t a thin fold-out mattress. A DWALS bed is built around a standard mattress size, and spring, foam or coir mattresses all work. At the measurement visit, DWALS asks about your mattress’s thickness and weight, and sets the gas struts to match. The mattress stays strapped to the frame and your bedding stays on it, so you close the bed made and open it made.
It’s built for nightly use
DWALS’s gas struts are rated to 300 kg and tested to 40,000 open-and-close cycles, and every mechanism is cycle-tested at its Pune factory before it leaves.
Where a normal bed wins
A fair comparison has to say where a wall bed asks more of you: installation, a daily routine, and a wall and ceiling that suit it.
Installation and wall fixing
A normal bed just needs delivering. A wall bed is fixed to the wall. DWALS uses anchors sized for brick, RCC or block walls, through a few points along the back of the cabinet, with no civil work, and its team installs a bed in one working day. Each bed is also made to measure in DWALS’s own factory in Pune, so there’s a production window before delivery. DWALS gives you the date at quotation.
Folding it every day
This is the honest trade-off. If you want to collapse into bed the moment you get home, or you’d rather not fold anything in the morning, a normal bed is simpler. A DWALS bed takes about eight seconds each way, with one hand, and you can close it made, but it’s still a step a normal bed doesn’t have.
Ceiling height and clearance
A normal bed fits under any ceiling. A vertical wall bed needs the height for its cabinet, about 6 ft 9 in at DWALS, and if your ceiling is under 7 ft 2 in, or a window or beam is in the way, DWALS builds it horizontal instead. Our comparison of horizontal vs vertical wall beds covers when each type fits. The room also needs enough depth for the bed to come down. Our guide to how much space a wall bed needs shows you how to measure.
What does a wall bed cost?
At DWALS, a vertical wall bed starts from ₹70,000 and a wall bed with a sofa from ₹1,25,000. Size, finish and how much of the wall you build out move the final number, and DWALS gives a fixed quotation only after measuring your wall. Compare that against the normal-bed quotes you’re getting, and weigh it against what the room can do once the bed folds away.
Daily use with elders and kids
A wall bed adds one thing a normal bed doesn’t: someone has to open and close it. DWALS says its bed can’t fall open on its own. When it’s closed, the struts hold it against the cabinet, and it only comes down when you pull the handle and guide it. At handover, a DWALS professional shows everyone in the household how to use the bed, including children, elders and senior citizens. If someone at home has particular needs, mention them at the measurement.
What about a rented flat, or moving house?
A normal bed simply moves with you. A wall bed can too. DWALS’s own team dismantles it, moves it and re-installs it in your new home, re-tuning the mechanism for the new wall at the same time. When it comes off a wall, the anchor holes are filled and painted over.
In a rented flat, DWALS says landlords generally treat a wall bed like a wall-mounted wardrobe or TV unit, and it can describe the fixing method in writing if your landlord or society asks. Always get your landlord’s agreement first.
What if something needs fixing later?
A normal bed has very little that can go wrong. A wall bed has a mechanism, so ask any maker what happens if it needs attention. DWALS says its own technicians handle service calls across Mumbai and the MMR, parts are kept in its own stores, and a gas strut is a bolt-on part that swaps in minutes. DWALS gives a 5-year warranty on the structure and lifting mechanism.
What about a box bed or a sofa-cum-bed?
- Box (storage) bed: a normal bed with storage underneath. It gives you somewhere to put things, but it still takes up the floor all day. A wall bed does the opposite: it frees the floor, and you plan storage elsewhere, for example with a full wall unit that adds wardrobes and lofts around the bed.
- Sofa-cum-bed: a sofa that opens into a bed. We compare the two in detail in wall bed vs sofa-cum-bed for a Mumbai 1BHK.
Quick checklist: which should you choose?
Choose a wall bed if:
- the room needs to be something else during the day, like an office, a play area or a living room
- you want to keep a full-size standard mattress, not a thin fold-out one
- you’re happy to fold the bed up each morning
- your wall and ceiling suit one (the free measurement will tell you)
Choose a normal bed if:
- the room is only ever a bedroom and you have floor space to spare
- you’d rather not fold anything, ever
- you can’t fix anything to the walls
Not sure? Let us measure

FAQ
Is a wall bed as comfortable as a normal bed?
A DWALS wall bed uses a standard mattress, single 3×6, double 4×6, queen 5×6 or king 6×6 ft, in spring, foam or coir. DWALS sets the strut force to your mattress’s thickness and weight at the measurement visit.
Can a wall bed be used every night?
Yes. A DWALS bed takes a standard mattress. Its gas struts are rated to 300 kg and tested to 40,000 open-and-close cycles, and it opens or closes in about eight seconds with one hand.
How much does a wall bed cost compared with a normal bed?
At DWALS, a vertical wall bed starts from ₹70,000, and the final price depends on size, finish and how much of the wall you build out. Compare that against the normal-bed quotes you’re getting.
Does a wall bed need wall work?
A DWALS wall bed is fixed with anchors sized for brick, RCC or block walls, through a few points along the back, with no civil work. DWALS’s own team installs a bed in one working day.
Can I keep my bedding on a wall bed?
Yes. The mattress stays strapped to the frame and the bedding stays on the mattress, so you close the bed made and open it made.
Can elders and kids use a wall bed?
At handover, a DWALS professional shows everyone in the household how to use the bed, including children, elders and senior citizens. DWALS says the bed only comes down when you pull the handle and guide it.
What happens to a wall bed if I move house?
DWALS’s own team dismantles it, moves it and re-installs it in your new home, re-tuning the mechanism for the new wall. The anchor holes left behind are filled and painted over.
When is a normal bed the better choice?
When the room is only ever a bedroom, you have floor space to spare, or you don’t want to fold a bed daily.
