Wall Bed vs Sofa-cum-Bed for a Mumbai 1BHK: Which Should You Choose?

By DWALS Team · Last updated October 2026

If someone will sleep on it every night, a wall bed usually makes more sense: it takes a proper mattress and folds away completely in the morning. If you mainly need daily seating and a bed for the odd guest, a sofa-cum-bed is simpler and needs no installation. And if you need a real sofa and a real bed on the same wall every day, there’s a third option that does both.

That’s the short answer. Choosing between a wall bed vs sofa cum bed for your own flat depends on three things: how often the bed gets slept on, how deep your living room is, and whether you rent. This guide walks through each one with real dimensions, so you can decide before you spend anything.

How we wrote this: every DWALS dimension, rating and price below is as published on dwals.in on 4 October 2026, and linked. We haven’t used industry averages or statistics we couldn’t trace to a source.

How each one works

Wall bed (Murphy bed)

A wall bed is a full bed frame hinged inside a shallow cabinet fixed to the wall. By day it stands upright, or sideways in a horizontal model, and the front looks like a cupboard. At night it swings down onto its legs. Gas struts or springs carry most of the weight, so you guide it rather than lift it. Sellers sometimes call it a “folding bed”, though that can also mean a roll-away cot.

At DWALS, the closed cabinet projects 12 inches (305 mm) from the wall. The gas struts are rated to 300 kg and cycle-tested to 40,000 opens, and the bed opens in about eight seconds with one hand (DWALS mechanism details).

Sofa-cum-bed

A sofa-cum-bed is a sofa that converts into a bed. The common types are:

  • Pull-out: a bed frame with a thin mattress slides out from under the seat.
  • Fold-out: the seat or backrest folds flat to form the sleeping surface.
  • Futon: a frame that reclines flat, with a single thick mattress acting as both seat and bed.

It’s freestanding, so there’s nothing to install.

Floor space in a 1BHK: what each one really takes

In a 1BHK where the living room doubles as a bedroom, the question is how much floor you get back by day.

A wall bed, closed, takes a strip about a foot deep along one wall. DWALS’s own comparison puts a deployed queen bed at about 50 sq ft of floor, against about 5 sq ft for its wall bed when closed (DWALS space comparison). When open, the room needs to fit the mattress length plus about a foot to walk past the foot of the bed (DWALS fit FAQ).

A sofa-cum-bed, closed, takes the same floor as any sofa. When open, it reaches out by roughly the length of the bed it becomes. Check both the closed depth and the open length on the seller’s listing, and measure your room at its narrowest point, not the widest.

Before you buy either, measure:

  1. The depth of the room from the wall you’d use to the opposite wall or furniture.
  2. The walkway you need to keep clear when the bed is open, for example to reach the door, balcony or kitchen.
  3. Ceiling height, if you’re considering a vertical wall bed. If yours is under 7 ft 2 in, or a beam or window is in the way, DWALS builds the bed horizontal instead (DWALS fit FAQ).

Not sure your room passes? The fit advisor on the DWALS homepage checks wall width, ceiling height and room depth for a vertical bed.

Comfort and daily sleeping

The mattress makes the difference

A wall bed is built around an ordinary mattress. DWALS’s beds take a standard single (3×6 ft), double (4×6 ft), queen (5×6 ft) or king (6×6 ft) mattress, in spring, foam or coir, and the strut force is set to suit your mattress’s weight at the measurement visit (DWALS mattress FAQ).

A sofa-cum-bed has to be a good sofa first, so its sleeping surface is usually a compromise: seat cushions with joins between them, or a thinner mattress that has to fold or slide away. That can be perfectly comfortable for a guest staying a few nights. For nightly use, lie on it in the shop for a few minutes and ask whether it’s designed for daily sleeping.

Wear from daily use

Anything that converts twice a day takes wear: the pull-out or fold-out mechanism and the cushions on a sofa-cum-bed, the lifting mechanism on a wall bed. Either way, ask for the mechanism’s rating in writing, and ask what happens if it fails. For reference, DWALS publishes a 300 kg load rating and a 40,000-cycle test for its struts (DWALS mechanism details), and its written warranty covers the structure and lifting mechanism, with the term printed on the quotation (DWALS warranty FAQ).

Which suits your routine?

Decide by how often the bed is slept on and how deep your room is.

Your situation Usually the better fit
Someone sleeps in the living room every night, and you don’t need a sofa there Wall bed
Someone sleeps there every night, and you also need a proper sofa by day Wall bed with sofa, if the room is about 9 ft deep or more
Same as above, but the room is under about 9 ft deep Wall bed with side cabinets instead, as DWALS suggests; ask for a measurement
Guests stay a few times a year Sofa-cum-bed
You expect to move often, or can’t fix anything to the walls Sofa-cum-bed
A couple needs a queen or king bed in a shared living room Wall bed

Why 9 ft? The sofa permanently adds about 85 cm in front of the wall, and DWALS says that in a room under 9 ft deep, this crowds the walkway (Wall Bed with Sofa).

Choose a wall bed if…

  • Someone sleeps on it most nights and needs a full mattress.
  • You want the floor completely clear by day, for work, exercise or kids’ play.
  • You’d rather not store bedding elsewhere every morning. On a DWALS bed, the mattress is strapped to the frame and the bedding stays on it, so you close the bed made and open it made (DWALS mattress FAQ).
  • You own the flat, or your landlord is fine with wall fixings.

Choose a sofa-cum-bed if…

  • The bed is mostly for occasional guests, and the sofa is what you’ll use every day.
  • Your budget is well below DWALS’s starting price of ₹70,000 for a vertical wall bed (DWALS price list).
  • You move often, rent short-term, or your landlord or society won’t allow wall fixings.
  • You want something you can buy now and rearrange whenever you like.

In these situations, a sofa-cum-bed is the right call. It’s only the wrong one when it ends up slept on every night.

The third option: a wall bed with a sofa in front

A wall bed with sofa — also searched as a Murphy bed with sofa in Mumbai — puts a proper sofa and a proper bed on the same wall. Here’s how DWALS’s version works, as published on its product page:

  • By day, a full three-seater sits in front of a 12-inch wall bed cabinet.
  • At night, the bed comes down over the sofa. As it does, the sofa slides forward 180 mm and its back folds flat, so you don’t have to move the sofa or clear the cushions.
  • The mechanism is the same 300 kg-rated, 40,000-cycle gas strut system, and it opens with one hand in about eight seconds.
  • Variants shown include a queen bed with a three-seater, a 4×6 bed with a two-seater, and a horizontal bed with a three-seater for lower ceilings.

The downsides, honestly

  • It needs room depth. The sofa adds about 85 cm in front of the wall. DWALS says a room under about 9 ft deep gets a crowded walkway, and suggests side cabinets instead (Wall Bed with Sofa).
  • It costs more than a wall bed on its own. On DWALS’s list, a wall bed with sofa starts from ₹1,25,000, against ₹70,000 for a vertical wall bed (DWALS price list).
  • It’s fixed to one wall. You can’t move the sofa to another corner, so plan the layout around it, including switchboards, windows and the TV wall.
  • It needs measuring and installation, unlike a sofa you can carry home the same week.

DWALS isn’t the only maker of this combination in Mumbai, so compare quotes on the same specification.

Cost: what to expect

At DWALS, a vertical wall bed starts from ₹70,000 and a wall bed with sofa from ₹1,25,000. Both are indicative prices, and the final price depends on size, finish and site conditions (DWALS price list). Other Mumbai sellers list sofa-and-wall-bed combinations too, for example one at ₹45,000 “excluding all taxes” on 4 October 2026 (IndiaMART listing), so check what each quote includes before comparing. For a full breakdown of what drives the price, see our wall bed price guide for Mumbai.

Renting in Mumbai: which is easier?

A sofa-cum-bed is simplest for renters: no wall fixings, no permission, and it moves like any sofa. Check it fits your building’s lift or staircase.

A wall bed takes more planning, but can still work. DWALS fixes its cabinets with anchors sized for brick, RCC or block walls, through a few points along the back, with no civil work. When you move, its own team dismantles the bed, transports it, re-installs it in the new home and re-tunes the mechanism to the new wall. Removal leaves a handful of anchor holes, which are filled and painted over (DWALS wall-fixing FAQ).

Before you order a wall bed in a rented flat:

  1. Get your landlord’s agreement in writing.
  2. Check whether your society needs to be informed about wall fixings.
  3. Make sure the new flat’s wall and ceiling can take the same bed, and ask what relocation costs.

So, which should you choose?

If the bed is slept on every night, choose a wall bed. If you also need a sofa there and your room is about 9 ft deep or more, choose a wall bed with sofa. If the bed is mainly for guests, or you move often, a sofa-cum-bed is the honest answer.

FAQ

Which is better for daily sleeping, a wall bed or a sofa-cum-bed?

For nightly sleeping, a wall bed is usually the better choice, because it takes a standard mattress rather than seat cushions or a thin fold-out one. A sofa-cum-bed suits daily seating with occasional overnight guests.

Can you sleep on a sofa-cum-bed every night?

You can, but many are designed to be a sofa first and a bed second. If it will be slept on nightly, test it in the shop, ask the seller whether it’s meant for daily sleeping, and check the mechanism’s rating and warranty.

Which saves more floor space in a 1BHK?

By day, a closed wall bed takes a strip about a foot deep, while a sofa-cum-bed takes the full sofa footprint. DWALS’s wall bed is 12 inches deep when closed. When open, both need room for the bed’s length plus a walkway.

Can a wall bed use a normal mattress?

Yes. DWALS’s wall beds take a standard single, double, queen or king mattress, in spring, foam or coir, and the strut force is set to suit your mattress at the measurement visit.

Can I have a sofa and a wall bed on the same wall?

Yes — see our wall bed with sofa page. At DWALS, the sofa slides forward 180 mm and its back folds flat as the bed comes down. The sofa adds about 85 cm in front of the wall, so DWALS recommends a room about 9 ft deep, and suggests side cabinets for shallower rooms.

Which is better for a rented flat?

A sofa-cum-bed is simpler, because it’s freestanding. A wall bed can work too: DWALS fixes its beds with anchors and no civil work, and its team dismantles and re-installs the bed when you move. Get your landlord’s agreement first.

How much does a wall bed cost?

At DWALS, a vertical wall bed starts from ₹70,000 and a wall bed with sofa from ₹1,25,000. Both are indicative prices: the final price depends on size, finish and site conditions, and is set after a free measurement.

How deep should my room be for a wall bed?

For a vertical wall bed, DWALS’s guidance is the mattress length plus about a foot to walk past the foot of the bed. For a wall bed with sofa, DWALS recommends a room about 9 ft deep.
